2006 - 2026 Graphic Communications Teacher

Dr. James A. Forrest Career & Technology Center

Leonardtown, MD 20650  301-904-7198

Teacher of the Year 2015-16

I taught project-based learning, an approach to classroom activities that emphasizes long-term, interdisciplinary, student-centered learning. This hands-on learning helps students build a varied portfolio and gain the knowledge to pursue higher education or secure and maintain a creative position in the graphic communications field. Highlights of my curriculum include Principles of Graphic Design, Typography, Design for Communication (the design process, page layout and identity design), Illustration, Digital Photography, Sign Manufacturing, and Portfolio Development.

My students develop the necessary skills to prepare them for a variety of creative positions in the Graphic Design field. Students develop planning and organizational skills, problem-solving skills, as well as decision-making capabilities.

2003 – 2006  Art Teacher, Esperanza Middle School

Lexington Park, MD 20653 301-863-4016

I believe there is a strong connection between learning in the arts and fundamental cognitive skills used to master other core subjects, including reading, writing, and mathematics. Visual communication is the most immediate and universal of all forms of communication and can engage any level of intelligence and variety of learning styles. My curriculum includes class projects and lessons that explore these connections with a focus on cultural diversity through the study of Art History in addition to the hands-on artmaking component. The artwork created is challenging on all levels of intelligence and expands each student’s creativity and problem-solving skills.
